
As a writer, I can attest that one of the biggest distractions ever, a leading cause of procrastination, is the Internet. Hey, look, I’m a social person. I like to check on my friends via Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr. But I will be the first to admit that hitting up all these various social sites severely minimize my productivity.
The thing is, I need the Internet to write. No bullshit, I mostly use the net for research and reference purposes. And while I’ve recently done a good an okay job staying off all the “playsites” while working, truthfully, my self control isn’t all that strong. Sometimes I’ll slip away from research to retweet some nonsense or comment on a buddy’s status update. What’s a writer to do?
Well, artist Steve Lambert and buddy Charlie Stigler have created the SelfControl app, a program that will lock you out of Facebook, Twitter, and email, but still allows you to use the Internet for research and writing (and porn).
How does it work? Check it:
Is email a distraction? SelfControl is an OS X application which blocks access to incoming and/or outgoing mail servers and websites for a predetermined period of time. For example, you could block access to your email, facebook, and twitter for 90 minutes, but still have access to the rest of the web. Once started, it can not be undone by the application, by deleting the application, or by restarting the computer—you must wait for the timer to run out.
