When Aqua released the totally fucking awesome Aquarium back in ’97, I was working at Spec’s Music, across from the University of Miami campus. My pop culture sensibilities served me well at the job, and I think a lot of Coral Gables’ white residents were quite surprised at my music and cinema knowledge.
In any case, one of the most popular songs at the time was Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” Surprisingly, a lot of people had no idea that was the name of the group and, not so surprisingly, many of my co-workers at the time were clueless, so I was usually the one to steer customers in the right direction. The album itself was cool, a fun collection of Danish-Norweigian pop. And while most people bought the album for, and only listened to, “Barbie Girl,” my favorite song was “Happy Boys and Girls.” Enjoy this little gem via video (complete with lyrics!) after the jump.
