Outkast’s Big Boi is slated to release his solo album Sir Luscious Leftfoot … Son of Chico Dusty in October, and so he’s dropped the second single, “Sumthin’s Gotta Give” featuring the incomparable Mary J. Blige. (The first single was the fanfuckingtastic “Royal Flush” with Andre 3000 and Raekwon the Chef.)
With the commercial success of Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III and the critical favorite Nigger, this is further proof that hip-hop music, and by extension, the culture, is not dead. It simply needs an injection of what made it so unique and exciting in the beginning: creativity, positivity, political activism, and soul. As Daddy Fat Sax told media insiders earlier this week:
I chose this song first because being in the game, I feel a responsibility to entertain but also lecture about life … I’d rather get people to vote instead of running to the strip club
