Kanye West has finally released the video for his anthemic “All of The Lights,” off his critically acclaimed and commercially successful My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
The video starts off with a seemingly random sequence involving a little girl in the projects before delving into a typography-based intro. Directed by hip-hop visual auteur Hype Williams, “Lights” is mostly a performance based video, with Kanye either stomping on the roof of a police car or rapping in Williams’ trademark hall of light. There’s also a few shots of Rihanna (looking fine as wine) and Kid Cudi (being Cudi-esque) before the video returns to its typographical M.O. en route to a seizure-inducing denouement.
UPDATE: It appears that Ye and Hype drew inspiration from Gaspar Noe‘s 2009 “psychedelic melodrama” Enter the Void. Tks to Scott Macauley over at Filmmaker for the heads up! Check out Enter the Void‘s title sequence here.
It’s a cool enough video. For all its flash and color, it’s still not the epic, grandiose video that the song deserves but since no one’s spending millions of dollars on music videos anymore anyway, it’ll just have to do.
