Actor Ephraim “Fetti” Benton has a ton of projects on his plate, but his newest venture isn’t something for the silver screen. Instead, its destination is the printed page.
Benton has created DD Publishing (Daddy Daughter Publishing), a collaboration between himself and his daughter Amber, who creates the characters and concepts. (Benton later steps in to fashion a more concrete story—with Amber’s final approval, of course). Their ultimate goal is to promote literacy in urban and impoverished communities.
Their first project is actually two books in one: the first, entitled Nail & Hammer, about two best friends, deals with child safety and friendship; the story is entitled Bill and His Adopted Siblings Cup, Blender and Blanket, and tells the story of the titular characters’ difficulty in making new friends after moving into a new neighborhood. The tale tackles issues such as self-identity, friendship, and self-confidence.
Benton is looking to produce this book via self-publishing, but he needs funding in order to realize his goal. That’s why he’s turned to crowdfunding site Kickstarter to help him out. He’s looking to raise a total of $3500 by March 16, 2011 (which is about on par for what a project this size would cost). You all know how Kickstarter works—if he doesn’t raise the total amount by the date set, he’ll get no funding at all.
A bit more about the project: As mentioned before, it’s two stories in one 6″ x 9″ reversible book complete with text and illustrations for children between the ages of 4 and 9. All contributions go toward printing 500 copies, paying for illustrations and formatting, and all associated business and marketing costs.
Benton plans on promoting the book at release parties and signing events at schools, libraries and bookstores as well as on social networking sites. If all goes well, the book will be available in June 2011.
Donations range from $10 to $1500, with each tier giving something unique in return to its backers. These tokens of appreciation include signed copies of the book, original framed character artwork, an invitation to the book release party, and brunch with the authors.
If you would like to make a donation to this project, please visit the project page on Kickstarter.
