Writing: May You Write Your Novel Challenges You To Write an 80K Word Novel in 80 Days

May You Write Your Novel: 80,000 Words in 80 Days

Ready for yet another writing marathon?

You’ve got a little less than two weeks to gear up for May You Write Your Novel, a writing exercise that challenges you to write an 80,000 word novel in 80 days. Conceived by author Sally Quilford, the May You Write Your Novel challenge begins on May 1st (see what was done there?) and ends on July 19th.

If this sounds similar to NaNoWriMo, well, that’s because it is similar. There’s no entry fee and no prize aside from (hopefully) having a completed project at the end. But there are differences: May You Write Your Novel ups the final word count from NaNoWriMo’s paltry 50,000. Why was this done?

“Agents and publishers seldom look at novels below 80k as they’re not viable as full-length novels,” says Quilford. “So the aim is to help you write your way to a full-length, saleable novel.”

Ah, gotcha. And the extended 80 day time frame certainly helps make this goal a bit, just a bit, easier to reach.
