You’re So Vain, You Probably Think GUESTLIST is About You #GLIST

Is GUESTLIST by Jay Fingers a Roman a Clef

Upon completion of a work, writers are always asked the same two questions.

The first is, “Which character is you?” or some variation thereof. It is constantly speculated that the story you’ve written is nothing more than a roman à clef, the fictionalization of real events and real people, a potentially damning bit of prose designed to humiliate those fucktards who’ve wrong the author in real life.

And that leads to second question – “Is [Character X] based on me?”

Or some variation thereof.

Since the release of GUESTLIST, people have me asked both questions, and while I wholly expected that readers would think that either Swann or Napoleon acted as my author avatar, I was not at all prepared for the onslaught of people questioning whether certain characters represented them.

There’s an old saying with which I’ve recently become enamored: “A hit dog will holler.” As defined by Urban Dictionary, it basically means, “A person acting sensitive, mad, or butt hurt as if something said applied to them … Someone who responds defensively to a general statement, meaning they clearly took it personal.”

It’s also applicable in this instance. And it’s downright amusing.

I’m going to leave it at that for now. But if you have something you’d like to say on this subject, please feel free to holler (like a hit dog) in the comments below.
