Jay Fingers Discusses GUESTLIST on Hip-Hop is For Lovers Radio

Jay Fingers Featured on Hip-Hop is For Lovers Radio #HH4L #GLIST

On last evening, I was fortunate enough to have been the special guest on internet radio show Hip-Hop is For Lovers, hosted by two lovely, intelligent hosts, Uche and Lenee. The aim of HH4L is to create a dialog about sexuality, intimacy, and relationships in hip-hop culture.

Last night, the topic was slut shaming, defined as “the deliberate act of calling a woman a slut, a whore or impugning her character in sexual terms in order to embarrass, humiliate, intimidate, degrade or shame her for actions or behaviors that are a normal part of female sexuality.” I chimed in here and there, but it was certainly interesting to hear the dialogue that was being had between the two hosts and their legion of followers, who responded mostly via Twitter and email.

Uche and Lenee invited me to speak about GUESTLIST, and afterward held a book giveaway. (Congrats to the winner, @SnakesOnABoat!). All in all, it was a great time and I am super grateful to the ladies of Hip-Hop is For Lovers for having me on the show. You can check out the show in its entirety here.

I Simply Adore Nicki Minaj

Jay Fingers Loves Nicki Minaj

It’s no secret that I adore Nicki Minaj. I think she’s super talented, and those who disagree are simply blinded by a baseless, unreasonable hatred for her. It’s one thing to not be a fan of her music; it’s another to outright deny Nicki’s talent.

In any case, the NY Times recently ran a piece written by Jon Caramanica that discussed Nicki’s place in hip-hop and pop culture, positing that she is the most influential female hip-hop artist of all time. It’s an assessment with which I’d agree.

Her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, drops tomorrow. You better goddamn believe I’m copping it right away. The tracklisting to PF:RR is below.

The Vagabonds – “Invisible” Music Video (From The Forthcoming EP #FML)

Late last night, The Vagabonds dropped “Invisible,” the first video from their upcoming EP entitled #FML. The song, produced by E.R., is a Baysiqly solo track, detailing the struggles of those who are ignored and overlooked. With everything going on in the world these days, especially with regard to the Occupy movement, this song is particularly timely and relevant. From VMG:

“Invisible” mashes up E.R.’s bouncy, psychedelic board work with cinematics from Mr. Visual, showing a first-person view of an individual being ignored by everyone who passes him by. That, along with flashes of current world events, is a deadly mixture that can drive anybody to insanity and irrational choices, as depicted by the ending of this video.

Mago x E.R. – “Best of Both Worlds” Music Video

This actually dropped a couple of weeks ago but I wasn’t blogging at the time so I missed the opportunity to let y’all know about the latest collaboration between my buddy E.R. (of The Vagabonds) and Dominican MC Mago.

“Best of Both Worlds” showcases the rhyme skills of the two Miami-based lyricists, the concept being that Mago (who also produced the track) spits in Spanish while E.R. raps in English. The song has no hook—it’s just the two MCs going back and forth, tag team-style. “Although Latinos have been well represented in hip-hop in the past,” E.R. writes on the VMG blog, “it’s rare to see both sides of the spectrum being showcased alongside each other.”
